I’ve just had some time off over Easter with my toddler, but now I’m back to work and have a new group of Mums and babies starting my baby massage course today — I’m really excited to meet them all.
It felt like the perfect time to write about something I’m really passionate about: the benefits of baby massage. I’ve shared some of this on my instagram, but I wanted to bring it all together here, along with what the research actually tells us.
Baby massage is often thought of as a nice, relaxing activity — and it absolutely is — but the benefits go far deeper than that. It can support your baby’s physical development, emotional wellbeing, and even their growing brain. And it’s not just about your baby either. There are real, evidence-based benefits for parents too.
Benefits for baby 👶
Physical benefits
Gentle massage can support your baby’s body in several ways:
- Digestive comfort — Specific massage techniques can help relieve wind, constipation and colic symptoms by encouraging movement through the digestive system
- Improved sleep — Babies who receive regular massage often settle more easily and sleep for longer stretches, likely due to the calming effect on their nervous system
- Muscle tone and body awareness — The sensory input from touch helps babies become more aware of their bodies and can support the development of coordination and movement
- Pain relief — Massage has been shown to help reduce discomfort from teething and growing pains
Emotional benefits
Touch is one of the most powerful ways we communicate with babies, especially before they have words.
- Promotes secure attachment — The focused, loving contact during massage helps strengthen the bond between you and your baby
- Regulates stress — Positive touch has been shown to lower cortisol (the stress hormone) and increase oxytocin in both baby and parent
- Builds trust and safety — Regular, predictable nurturing touch helps babies feel secure in their relationship with you
Developmental benefits
- Supports brain development — Early sensory experiences, including touch, are essential for building neural connections in a baby’s developing brain
- Enhances body awareness — Massage helps babies understand where their body is in space, which supports later motor development
- Encourages communication — Massage provides a natural opportunity for eye contact, talking and singing, all of which support early language and social development

Benefits for parents 🤱
Baby massage isn’t just something you do for your baby — it’s something that benefits you too. It’s also not just for Mums, the benefits are just as great and important for Dads and other caregivers!
Emotional benefits
- Boosts confidence — Learning to read your baby’s cues and respond to them during massage can help you feel more confident in your parenting
- Reduces postnatal anxiety and low mood — Studies have shown that parents who practise baby massage regularly report lower levels of stress, anxiety and depressive symptoms
- Strengthens bonding — The focused one-to-one time helps deepen your connection with your baby, which can be especially valuable if bonding has felt difficult
- Creates calm in your day — Massage gives you a reason to slow down, be present, and enjoy a quiet moment together
Physical benefits
- Promotes relaxation — The rhythmic, repetitive movements of massage can be soothing for you too, helping to lower your own stress levels
- Oxytocin release — Touch triggers the release of oxytocin in parents as well as babies, which supports feelings of love, calm and connection
How do you do it?
You don’t need any special equipment or training to start massaging your baby at home — but attending a course can be a lovely way to learn techniques, build your confidence, and connect with other parents going through the same stage. I run small group classes (up to 6 parents & babies) from my home, so it’s relaxed and comfortable with everything you need. But I can also do private classes or come to you if you prefer.
If you’re curious about baby massage or wondering whether it might be right for you and your baby, feel free to get in touch or have a look at my upcoming courses. Sometimes it’s the simplest things that make the biggest difference 💛
